炭山について ● About Sumiyama district
炭山(すみやま)は、宇治市の中心部より北東に約4キロほど離れた山あいにある地域で、陶芸の里として知られています。
海抜約160メートルに位置する炭山は、都市の喧噪から離れ、澄んだ青空と四季折々に訪れる鳥たちの鳴き声が響き渡る安らぎの里です。
Sumiyama is known as a mountainous pottery village, and it locates 4km northeast of central Uji and about 160 meters above sea level. From season to season, lovely sounds of birds singing can be heard clearly under the blue sky.
炭山 陶器の里のあゆみ Transition of Sumiyama pottery village
一九六六年頃、炭山で、「京焼・清水焼」の制作が始まっり、恵まれた創作環境が認識されるにつれて相次いで窯元が移り住み一九七〇年頃には三十以上の窯元が炭山に集まるなか、（協）炭山陶芸は一九七四年、組合を設立し、「陶器の里炭山」の一翼を担うようになりました。
Around 1966, the act of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki work in Sumiyama was stated. Thanks to its great working environment, more than thirty workshops came to move in from 1970. Then, they established Sumiyama pottery cooperative association in 1974.
炭山に最初の工房が築かれてから約50年、「京焼・清水焼」は、炭山の地にしっかり根を下ろし、宇治の地場産業として認知されるようになりました。
It has been about fifty years since the first workshop settled down in Sumiyama. Now, Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki are firmly known as the local industry in Uji area.
「京焼・清水焼」の伝統を受け継ぐ炭山の陶芸ですが、その作品は実に多様で、炭山の作家たちも、、日々、新しい「京焼・清水焼」に挑戦しています。
Though the art of pottery in Sumiyama has being passed down from the traditions of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki, each workshop is challenging to create modern methods and design a wide variety of pottery works.
四季折々、それぞれに美しい炭山の里では、素敵な焼物、ゆたかな自然との出逢いが待っています。
Here in Sumiyama, visitors can enjoy lovely handmade pots and wonderful encounters of the nature from season to season.
また毎年四月の第一土日には「宇治川桜まつり」に協賛して、宇治川の塔の島にて「炭山陶器まつり」が二日間にわたって行われます。
And now, Sumiyama Pottery Festival is held on the first Saturday and Sunday in April every year. The festival is cooperatively supported by Uji-gawa Sakura Festival (Cherry Blossom Festival of Uji river), and opens on Touno Island in Uji river
多くの人に焼物に親しんでもらい、炭山の京焼のよさを知ってもらおうと1980年から始められたこのまつりも、いまではすっかり宇治の春の風物詩となっています。
Since 1980, this festival has been being held in order to make more visitors familiar with pots and the good quality of Kyo-yaki in Sumiyama. It represents as one of spring features in Uji.
二〇〇六年からは炭山陶芸青年会が主体となり、炭山の地で「炭山窯元まつり」を開催し、工房内の見学やロクロ体験などの体験をしてもらっています。
Pottery Festival in Sumiyama has been opening by the Young Men’s Association since 2006, and visitors can take part in a workshop tour and wheel trial lesson.

Sumiyama Tougei (Sumiyama Pottery) is willing to ask potters for designing original pots as a customer’s gift of wedding and anniversary.
